EEF Database, NPD Analysis and Data Archive

EEF is an independent charity aims to raise the attainment of disadvantaged children in primary and secondary schools in England. In this light, different projects have been conducted in order to evaluate new interventions directly or indirectly involving pupils through their educational attainment. My role is to support the analysis of archive of all EEF projects data provided to Durham University. This data comprises randomized control trials in education.

Mass media and Family planning

This study examines the role of IEC specifically mass media in improving the family planning indicators in India. The levels and changes in family planning indicators have been seen among the women’s who are exposed to family planning messages through different communication media using large scale demographic health survey for India. A measure called average treatment effect (ATE) was utilized to know the role of exposure to family planning messages in family planning outcome. This basically study the effect of the average difference in family planning indicator for the exposed and unexposed individuals to messages once all factors associated with assignment to the exposed group has been partially out. The positive treatment effect signifies that the exposed individuals were having higher level of indicator (contraceptive use, knowledge of spacing method etc.) while the unexposed individuals have been on the lower side and negative treatment effect signifies that the unexposed individuals were having the higher level of indicator (current use of modern contraceptive, knowledge of spacing methods etc.) as compared to the exposed individuals.

Tobacco use behaviour

I have worked on several research studies on tobacco use behaviour of adults and its health effects using a large-scale tobacco survey in India. My research shows that ample socioeconomic differences exist in smoking behaviour and health outcomes in India, which has not changed over time. I am looking forward to work further on implications of smoking behaviour on socioeconomic inequalities in health outcomes in other LMICs.

Improvement in life expectancy and reducing disparity

This was my PhD thesis which was focused to examine the improvement in survival rates in India with unconventional indicators of mortality such as the average life loss, which captures not only the changes in the average length of life but also the modifications in the distribution of deaths by age. This study uses large scale database of mortality in India, statistical models and life table approach. Currently I am working to expand my horizon of work in other Asian countries.

Spatial analysis of child mortality at local level

This project pertains to application of spatio-temporal data analysis tools to the statistical modelling of child mortality at the district level in India using national level data sources. Using geocoded district-level data from the last two census rounds (1991 and 2011) and ordinary least squares, geographically weighted regressions and cluster analysis, this project identify local relationships between under-five mortality rate and a series of determinants for two periods separated by 20 years (1986–1987 and 2006–2007). This project advocate the view that identifying local predictors of under-five mortality is important for designing interventions in specific areas. The project is funded under MOVE-IN Louvain” Incoming Post-doctoral Fellowship, co-funded by the Marie Curie Actions of the European Commission.
